KATHMANDU: Kathmandu-Delhi flight is resuming after nine-month-long suspension due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Governments of both countries have decided to resume regular flights along the Kathmandu-New Delhi route under the ‘Air Transport Bubble Mechanism,’ the Embassy of India in Kathmandu said.

There will be two flights per day on the route, starting from December 17. National flag carrier Nepal Airlines Corporation (NAC) and India’s Air India will fly on the route.

Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) Deputy Director, Raj Kumar Chhetri, confirmed that the booking has opened.

CAAN informed that Nepal has now opened flights to all international destinations.

After flights were suspended on March 23, the government had resumed international flights from September 1. However, flights to three Indian destinations — New Delhi, Mumbai, and Bangalore — were not opened due to the high infection rate in India.

The Cabinet meeting on November 25 had agreed to accept the ‘Air Bubble Model’ proposed by India.

According to the press statement issued by the Indian Embassy, Nepal is all prepared to resume flights and has opened the booking system as per ‘Air Transport Bubble Concept’.

The Indian airline company has also opened booking for Kathmandu from today.

On the other hand, Bangladesh, Bhutan, and Thailand have not resumed flights to Nepal yet. A total of 29 airline companies including three domestic ones fly to 16 countries from Tribhuvan International Airport.
