Holi Festival in Nepal

Holi, also known as the festival of colors, locally called Fagu purnima, is one of the most celebrated festivals in Nepal. Though being a Hindu festival, people of every religion join together to celebrate this joyous festival in Nepal. Holi is celebrated for the triumph of good over evil, the end of winter, and the beginning of the warm and lively spring season. It takes place during the full moon in the Hindu calendar month of Falgun/Chaitra, which falls in March. Holi is celebrated in two days in Nepal, one day in the Hilly region and the next day in the Terai region. For 2026, it will be celebrated on the 2nd and 3rd of March accordingly.

This joyous festival unites people of different ethnicities from all over Nepal and the world. Whether you are a local or a tourist, people come together to splash colors and waters on their loved ones, sharing laughter and joy. We at Beyond the Limits Treks and Expedition would like to invite you to experience this joyous festival and feel Nepali culture and tradition up close.

Story of Holi Festival in Nepal

Holi also called Fagu Purnima in the Nepali language is filled with rich cultural significance. According to Hindu mythology, the Holi highlights themes of devotion, love, and the triumph of righteousness. The story behind the Holi festival includes two demonic siblings Hiranyakashipu and Holika. According to the Hindu sacred book “Bhagwat Gita” Hiranyakashipu, an arrogant king, demanded to be worshiped as a god. However, his son Prahlad was a devout follower of Lord Vishnu and refused to do so. Angered by his son’s devotion, Hiranyakashipu sought to kill him.

Hiranyakashipu sought his sister Holika, who had a boon that made her immune to fire, to kill his son Prahlad. Holika tricked Prahlad into sitting on a blazing fire in her lap, intending to burn him. However, her immunity to fire failed because her act was driven by malice. Prahlad's unwavering devotion to Lord Vishnu protected him, while Holika was consumed by fire. This event is celebrated on the eve of Holi with Holika Dahan, a ritual bonfire symbolizing the victory of good over evil.

Radha and Krishna Story

Another interesting story behind the Holi festival is of Radha and Lord Krishna and their divine love.  Lord Krishna was known for his playful nature but was very concerned about his dark skin complexion and whether Radha would accept him. So, on his mother Yasodha's advice, Krishna approached Radha and smeared her face with colors. This playful act by Krishna became a symbol of love and unity, inspiring this festival of colors Holi.

How is Holi Celebrated in Nepal?

Holi in Nepal is a grand celebration filled with joy, music, and colors. People around the country celebrate it by applying bright colors to people and lighting bonfires.

Holi in Kathmandu Valley

Holi in Basantapur

Basantapur is the hub for Holi celebrations in Kathmandu Valley. A Chir is raised in Basantapur (Kathmandu Durbar Square), a ceremonial bamboo pole decorated with colorful cloth strips. The same chir is later burned that evening as part of the Holi Dahan ritual. On this day, streets are filled with people wearing white T-shirts(to show the color that people put on them) and face covered with joyous smiles and colorful colors. Children throw water balloons at each other, and people gather together and dance to music. Other places like Bhaktapur, Patan, Pokhara, and Thamel are also famous for celebrating Holi. People walk in the streets with colorful faces and put colors on other people and tourists and celebrate this festival in the best way.

Holi in the Terai region

In Terai, Holi is celebrated a day later than in Kathmandu or the Hilly region. Here, people go to each other house put colors on each other, dance to traditional songs, and play water games. Here culture can be seen more than in the Hilly region which adds a unique cultural flavor to the festival charm.

Tips to Celebrate Holi Safely

Holi is one of the crazy festivals of Nepal, but it is important to celebrate it responsibly. Here are some tips from Beyond the Limits Treks to ensure your experience is safe and enjoyable:

  • Stick to the trusted events. Play Holi in organized events or play with locals in a trusted environment. We can help you find the best places to celebrate.
  • Protect your belongings. It would be a good idea to leave your valuable belongings like your passport in your hotel or secure them in waterproof bags to avoid damage.
  • You have to prepare your skin and hair by applying lotion and oil to prevent colors from sticking. While playing Holi colors might go in your ear or in your mouth so it's better to be careful as well.
  • Wear the right attire like old and comfortable clothes that you don't mind getting some stain. Many locals wear white T-shirts which they buy in local shops for this day. Holi-themed t-shirts are also available in places like Thamel.
  • Use Organic and temporary colors. Use such colors to protect your skin, hair and the environment.
  • You will be dancing and walking a lot, so do not forget to drink water and eat some food to stay hydrated and energized.

Concerns Regarding the Holi Festival

Some of the concerns that you should be aware of during Holi festivals are as follows:

  • Be cautious in crowded streets to avoid pickpockets. Stick with trusted companions or guides.
  • Some colors may be chemically harmful, always choose natural organic powders for a safe celebration.
  • Do not waste too much water or throw waste in the streets.

Holi Festival 2026 Dates

Enjoying holi in ThamelIn 2026, Holi will be celebrated on the 4th of March in Kathmandu and other Hilly regions, including Pohara, and on the 5th of March in the Terai region. If you want to enjoy this vibrant festival to the fullest, you could plan your trip accordingly.
