Lower Dolpo Trek is an outstanding trek that offers the pristine culture of rustic life, the wilderness of nature as well as the panorama of the snow-clad mountains and Phoksundo Lake. Lower Dolpo trek was opened for trekking purposes in 1992 in combination with beautiful land escape and Tibetan culture. This trek is a more challenging trek than other Trekking routes which are located in the Northern-Western part of Nepal. for organized group trekking and trekkers require a special permit from the government of Nepal. In this trek, you get insight into the Thinley culture near Tibet that has survived its originality for centuries. Eric Valli in his Oscar-nominated film Caravan has shown the Dolpo region of Nepal in all its integrity and full mystical experience. The main focal point of this trek is Shey Phoksundo National Park, the biggest national park of Nepal where you can explore various types of flora and fauna, wild animals, and birds as well as the medicinal herbs including Yarsagomba. Shey Phoksundo Lake which is the deepest lake of Nepal, mountain vistas, Buddhist monasteries, and the culture of the Himalayan people is another attraction of the Lower Dolpo trek.

Lower Dolpo begins from the Juphal after the scenic flight from Kathmandu via Nepalgunj. In this trek you pass through the dense forest subtropical forest, Shey Phoksundo National Park, River valleys, the forest of rhododendrons, numerous villages, Monasteries, etc. you also visit the Shey Phoksundo Lake with beautiful turquoise blue water which contains no aquatic life. While traveling through the Shey Phoksundo National Park you can see various types of flora and fauna as well as encounter rare wild animals like spotted leopard, blue sheep, Himalayan wolf, the Himalayan black deer, etc and hear the chirping sound of the Birds. In this trek, you also cross the high passes of Baga La and Numa La both above 5000m. You visit the highest village in the world Tarap village at the altitude of 4040 m. In this village, you see the practice of polyandry and pre-Buddhist religion called “Bon Po”. The best season to go for Lower Dolpo Trek is autumn and spring when the weather is clear and you can have a clear view of the mountains as well as the natural scenery.
